Principal Function:

The Junior Network Engineer is responsible for the configuration, implementation, and support of NetCarrier’s internal and customer networks. This person acts as high-level technical resource on configurations and network builds, specifically as they apply to customer installations. All members of the Network Engineering department serve as Tier 3 network support, handling escalations from Technical Support and Network Operations.

 

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Equipment programming, configuration, and maintenance (DSLAMs, IADs, edge routers, switches, firewalls).
  • Assist the Circuit Design group with troubleshooting and acceptance of new circuits (T1, fiber, EoC).
  • Administration and assignment of public IP addressing.
  • While not a primary function, this position is responsible for working with both vendors and customers to resolve issues and to ensure that delivered services match expectations.
  • Work with our dispatch team to support customer installations (co-location and on-site).
  • Assist with special projects and after-hours maintenance as assigned by department manager.
  • Rotating 24×7 on-call emergency maintenance and trouble ticket support as Tier 3 escalation point.

Status and Scope:

  • This position reports directly to the manager of Network Engineering.
  • The Junior Network Engineer works closely with tier 1 support and network operations for trouble resolution, as well as with order support personnel from various departments for new service delivery.

 

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science preferred; CCNA or equivalent required.
  • Experience: 1-3 years of directly-related professional work experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Cisco IOS, Adtran IOS, IP Routing (including dynamic routing via OSPF, BGP, etc.), Switching, VoIP, Ethernet, MPLS, VPN, Firewalls.
  • A working knowledge of T1/DS1 (PPP, ATM, ISDN), DS3, and SONET is desirable.
